Rare Bird of Fashion: The Irreverent Iris Apfel

This is the first book about fashion that I've purchased. I ordered it after hearing an interview with Mrs. Apfel on NPR. She sounded like a hoot in the interview so I thought I'd give it a try. The book is loaded with full page photos of manequins dressed in the outfits she put together over the years. What a celebration they are! High fashion with, I think, a wild Bohemian streak. Her use of clothing is an expression of joy. For me it was more about human spirit than fashion.

This book is a must for anyone who is a student of textiles, fashion and style. The photographs, attention to detail and amazing colors provide great ideas for adding some creativity to any mundane wardrobe. The rich and original combinations of color and design are a refreshing change from the prescriptive wardrobe choices bombarding us in department stores. The book is beautifully designed with interesting narrative, documentation and layout. A great addition to any fashion addict's library!

It told her story well and the images are full of the rich colors and textures that defined her life. The physical book itself is of excellent quality, printed on heavy stock, and should last as long as I do. There are many interesting pictures of her shopping in marketplaces in faraway places. The richness of the fabrics and the vividness of the colors are just spectacular and portray the way she lived fully out loud! Love this book!

If you love Iris, you will love this book! It goes into her history, which is fascinating and includes many fabulous photos. I am very happy I purchased it.

What less is more...Iris Apfel would tell you No No No and show many ways to wear clothing and accessories for More More More looks. mixing high and low is a great way to go.

Tons of photos and descriptions of Iris Affel's work. I was a fan. Had to have this book especially when I heard of her passing. She was truly one of a kind.

The fashions are wonderful! I bought this after seeing the documentary film about Iris Apfel, and I was hoping there would be more photos of her, but the clothes are all shown on mannequins, as they appeared in an exhibit. There are a few good photos of her and her apartment. I hope someone will come out with a book that features Iris and her lifestyle.

I've been a devotee of Iris since she began her visits on tv. I'm so glad that I bought so many of her items. Now she's gone and many of her accessories or "faux" things are being hawked online. Buyer beware!

This book is about Iris Barrel Apfel, who has got to be one of the most amazing "with it" couture icons of the 21st century. At 90-od years young, she has lived a life of far-reaching proportions, travelling as part of her interior decorating company, Old World Weavers, who redecorated the US White House no less than 5 times. Apfel has an "eye for fashion", and knows combinations of texture, materials and colour that look good, that no one otherwise would consider. Since retiring from interior decorating company, she has made herself the object of decoration - sometimes so far flung and outrageous that the Metropolitan Museum of Art held an exhibit in her honour (this book is that exhibition's catalogue). Apfel mixes high couture fashion with tribal jewellery from around the work, often mixing kitschy items with Givenchy and Halston, and generally having fun with it all. A small woman, she is an unlikely model or role model (she was told once she'd never be a beauty, but she had something far more important: STYLE), and as to her taste, it's out of this world! Get this book if you like the quirky side of people and fashion, and want to emulate them. Not for fashion conservatives!

Ce livre magnifiquement illustré résume toutes les créations de Iris Apfel. Un seul regret : pas de photo d'elle portant ses tenues extravagantes. Par contre des photos d'elle jeune qui sont intéressantes.

I found this coffee table book a must for those interested in fashion and accessories. Iris puts together fabulous looks with such class and style. Some a little over done but all works amazingly well. Interesting information about Iris and her life’s journey through fashion and textiles. The photography is stunning showing individual pieces. Thoroughly enjoyed and often refer to it for inspiration.
